Herkimer travels to Buffalo, sweeps Kats

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The Herkimer Generals Baseball team wrapped up their fifth and sixth games in three days traveling to Erie Community College on Saturday. When both games were finished, Herkimer defeated the Kats 40- and 7-3, increasing their current win streak to 12 games.

Herkimer 21-5 (11-1) made the trip to western New York to take on one of the best programs in the western side of Region III in Erie Community College. Herkimer ran out its freshman Mike Harrington (Glens Falls, NY) and he answered the call throwing his 3rd straight complete game in game one. Harrington worked all seven innings allowing five hits, two walks, no runs with three strikeouts.

Erie also got a strong start out of their ace from last season, who was coming off some arm issues from earlier in the season, in 2013 1st Team All-Region selection Mike Schnurr. The game was held scoreless until the sixth inning. With Schnurr lifted from the game Herkimer’s Shinnosuke Takahashi (Chiba, Japan) would lead off the inning with a double to left centerfield. John Boland (Rhinebeck, NY) sacrificed Takahashi over to third base and pinch hitter Eric Downey (Colonie, NY) was walked. Downey then stole second base and with infield in, Tom Carrigan (Niskayuna, NY) would hit a ball to the right side that would kick off the infielders’ glove to score two. Carrigan would steal second base, then advanced to third on a 4-3 groundball out. Carrigan then scored on a wild pitch and extend the lead to 3-0 after six innings. Boland added an RBI single in the seventh inning scoring A.J. Fabrizio (Palm City, FL) to extend the lead to 4-0. That was enough for Harrington who finished out what he started to move to 3-0 on the season. Harrington is currently holding a 0.47 ERA on the season as well. Takahashi went 2-3 and Christopher Burns III (Endicott, NY) went 2-4 in game one.

In game two, Herkimer got on the board much earlier, plating three runs in the first inning all with two outs. Herkimer took advantage of four walks and left bases loaded to end the inning. Takahashi added an RBI single in the second inning to score Burns to extend the lead to 4-0. Herkimer added two runs in the fourth inning but Erie responded with three runs of their own in the fourth to make it 6-3. Downey scored in the fifth after a triple to make it 7-3.

Will Apps (Cicero, NY) and Denis Lyman (Kingston, NY) relieved starter Ben Moxley (Oneonta, NY) with two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh. Moxley improved to 2-1 working five innings allowing one hit, two walks and zero earned runs with three strikeouts.

Herkimer travels to Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Tuesday, facing a Raider team which is the second best in the East. The Raiders will host the Generals in a doubleheader with the first game scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
