Harrington and Garrison finish off spring trip

SUPPLY, NC – The Herkimer Generals baseball team finished their spring trip splitting games with DII Brunswick Community College on Thursday (3/20) and DIII Gloucester County Community College on Saturday (3/22). The Generals took game one against the Dolphins 3-1, but lost the second game 13-1. Against the Roadrunners, Herkimer lost game one 3-2 in 10 innings, coming back to win game two 3-1 in seven.

Freshman Mike Harrington (Glens Falls, NY) won his college debut on the mound against Brunswick, throwing a seven inning complete game, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks. Harrington also added two strike outs to his totals.

Chris Burns (Endicott, NY) helped Herkimer offensively, going 2-for-3 against the Dolphins in game one, knocking a run in the third inning. Outfielder A.J. Fabrizio (Palm City, FL) added to that in the fourth, singling home a run. Brunswick answered back in the sixth, coming within one run of the Generals (2-1), but sophomore Carlos Almonte (Brooklyn, NY) doubled home a run in the seventh to make it 3-1.

In game two, Lucas Godlewski (Little Falls, NY) allowed nine runs in the first inning, his debut as a General. Brunswick added to it, scoring twice in the second and third inning, finishing off the second game in five innings, winning 13-1.

On Saturday, Herkimer lost to defending national champ Gloucester in the bottom of the 10th inning off of sophomore Ben Moxley (Oneonta, NY). Moxley relieved Michael DeCarlo (Wynantskill, NY) who started and went five innings, allowing two runs, one of them unearned.

Alexander Lynch (Newport, NY) relieved Moxley for two innings, allowing no runs despite two walks. Moxley pitched from the eighth inning on, going 2 1/3, allowing one run on four hits.

In game two, Herkimer found themselves down by one run going into the fifth inning with Kyle Garrison (Schenectady, NY) pitching well into the sixth, but managed to score two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh, giving Garrison his second win of the week, attaining the win over the Roadrunners, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings pitched.

Scoring there three runs were Tyler Phillips (Hancock, NY), John Boland (Rhinebeck, NY) and Shinnosuke Takahashi (Chiba, Japan). Earning RBIs were Harrington and Lonnie Cohen (Teaneck, NJ).

Herkimer stands at 7-3 on the season. They’ll play back-to-back days against Columbia-Greene this weekend, one home and one away. On Saturday, the Generals will travel to the Twins, playing games at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. On Sunday, the Twins will come to Herkimer, playing another double header at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
