Baseball reaches 19 consecutive wins in sweep of Raiders

JOHNSTOWN, NY – Coming off an impressive weekend sweep of Hudson Valley, the Herkimer Generals baseball team continued their winning ways on Tuesday (4/28), defeating Fulton-Montgomery 12-2 and 12-1 in a doubleheader, increasing the team’s current win streak to 19 games, 15 of them coming against the Mountain Valley Conference.

Herkimer (27-3, 16-1) saw more impressive starting pitching come from Marcus Failing (Fort Plain, NY) and Thomas Carola (Hicksville, NY). Both threw complete games, their second of the season, helping Failing to his fourth win (4-0) and Carola to his second (2-0). In Failing’s third start he allowed two runs off of six hits, striking out five Raiders. In Carola’s second start the freshman allowed one run off of six hits, fanning six hitters.

Leading the Generals in the runs batted in category again was outfielder Taishi Terashima (Hiranai, Japan). The sophomore had four RBI from the leadoff spot, hitting perfect from the plate (6-for-6) with two doubles. Terashima is ranked third nationally in batting average (.506) and on-base percentage (.571).

One RBI behind Terashima was John Boland (Rhinebeck, NY) and Gregory Hotaling (Averill Park, NY). Each played one game in the doubleheader. Boland went 2-for-3 in game one and Hotaling went 2-for-2 in game two with three RBI. Boland has 13 runs batted in throughout his last eight games, ranked fourth in the nation with a .489 batting average. In 11 games, Hotaling has eight runs batted in for the Generals.
