Baseball gives Wood Ducks first loss of season

FROSTPROOF, FL – Opening their regular season against undefeated Century last Friday (3/13), the Herkimer Generals baseball team defeated the Wood Ducks in a doubleheader 6-5 and 12-2.

Herkimer (2-0) was aided by the long ball in the doubleheader, getting two in each game. Patrick Dorrian (Kingston, NY) and Christian Malave (Milford, CT) got the first two, combing for five RBI’s. Dorrian finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and Malave finished 1-for-3 with 2RBI.

In game two, Tyler Phillips (Hancock, NY) and Matt Lichtman (Smithtown, NY) supplied the power, seeing each collect 3 RBI’s a piece with Philips going 2-for-3 and Lichtman going 3-for-3 at the plate.

Getting the win in game one was Mike Harrington (Glens Falls, NY). The sophomore went 5 1/3 innings strong, allowing three earned runs on six hits. Following Harrington was Patrick Merryweather (Baldwinsville, NY). The lefty threw a complete game, allowing two unearned runs in 5 innings. Both Harrington and Merryweather struck out five batters.

Earning a save in game one was Thomas Carola (Hicksville, NY). The freshman allowed no runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Herkimer continues their spring trip on Saturday (3/14), facing Waubonsee Community College at Lake Mytle Park at 3 and 5 p.m. The Chiefs finished fourth in the nation last season
