Shortslef rides no hitter into fifth inning, Generals sweep Chiefs

LAKE MYRTLE PARK, FL – Riding a no hitter by Jake Shortslef (Hannibal, NY) in game two of a doubleheader last Saturday (3/14) against Waubonsee Community College, the Herkimer Generals baseball team swept their second straight opponent, beating the Chiefs 8-0 and 5-0.

Herkimer (4-0) got solid pitching performances for a second consecutive day from Marcus Failing (Fort Plain, NY) and Shortslef. Failing earned his first win of the season going 4 1/3 strong, allowing four earned runs on six hits before Will Apps (Cicero, NY) came in for the save.

Shortslef got his first win, retiring the first 12 batters he faced, riding a no hitter into the fifth. The sophomore ended up going 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs off two hits before Joey Butler (Ballston, NY) for the save. Shortslef also struck out seven batters.

Providing the offense in game one was Taishi Terashima (Hiranai, Japan) and Patrick Dorrian (Kingston, NY). A double for Tershima in the first inning gave the sophomore 2 RBI’s, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Dorrian hit his second home run of the season, helping the freshman to two RBI also, collecting seven in his first four games as a General.

In game two John Boland (Rhinebeck, NY) collected one double and two triples which helped the catcher to two RBI’s in the game, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Joining Boland with a run batted in was Gregory Hotaling (Averill Park, NY). The freshman utility player went 0-for-3 with one RBI.

Herkimer will play its third doubleheader in three days on Sunday (3/15). They’ll face Western New York Athletic Conference rival Niagara Community College at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. The Generals knocked the Thunderwolves out of the 2014 Region III Final Four with a 13-5 win in the quarterfinals. Sunday’s game will be played at Chain of Lakes Park Field #3.
