Generals split with Raiders to end spring trip

CHAIN OF LAKES, FL – Splitting their first doubleheader of the season Wednesday (3/18), the Herkimer Generals baseball team defeated Oakton Community College 9-5 in game one, but lost to the Raiders 4-3 to wrap up their spring trip.

Herkimer (8-2) had won their first three doubleheaders, outscoring the competition 57-20. The team stayed on that track in game one with Mike Harrington (Glens Falls, NY) getting his second start of the season. The sophomore earned his team leading second win, going four strong innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits. By the time Harrington left the game, Herkimer had a six run lead (7-1) which allowed the bullpen to get some work.

Joe DeSarro (Frankfort, NY) and Will Apps (Cicero, NY) finished the game in relief, allowing two runs in the final three innings. Both allowed an earned run on one hit, however DeSarro doubled Apps inning count, also collecting a strikeout.

Offensively, the Generals managed to collect 11 hits, all of which were singles. Tyler Phillips (Hancock, NY) and Taishi Terashima (Hiranai, Japan) both had the most on the team with three. It helped Phillips to three RBI and Terashima to three runs scored. One hit behind those two was Christian Malave (Milford, CT). The freshman collected two RBI while going 2-for-4 at the plate.

In game two, runs weren’t as abundant, scoring a season-low three in seven innings. It wasted a solid pitching performance from Patrick Merryweather (Baldwinsville, NY) - pitching six strong innings against the Raiders – allowing four earned runs on nine hits.

Despite the low run total, the Generals still managed 10 hits as a team. Of those 10, Malave and Thomas Carrigan (Niskayuna, NY) made the best of them. Malave collected two RBI on his second home run of the season, which is tied for the most on the team. Carrigan didn’t get a hit in the second game, but collected his third RBI and fourth walk of the season.

Herkimer’s next doubleheader is on Saturday, March 28th. They’ll travel to play Columbia-Greene Community College in their first Mountain Valley Conference game of the season. Start times are 12 and 2 p.m.
