Baseball wraps up regular season with 31 consecutive wins

UTICA, NY – Playing their final doubleheader before a sub-regional playoff game at home this coming Saturday (5/9), the Herkimer Generals swept Mohawk Valley Community College 8-4 and 15-5 for the team’s 31st consecutive victory, 27 of them coming against conference opponents.

Herkimer (39-3, 27-1) started off slow in game with Thomas Carola (Hicksville, NY) on the mound. The freshman did well, only allowing four earned runs in five innings of work, but the Generals didn’t take the lead (6-5) until the sixth inning after Taishi Terashima (Hiranai, Japan) was hit with the bases load. Then teammate Patrick Dorrian (Kingston, NY) followed with a sacrifice which scored two runs, making the win more possible for relief pitcher Will Apps (Cicero, NY) who came in the sixth. Apps pitched two shutout innings, collecting his second win of the season in the process.

Game two was different, as Herkimer scored eight runs in the first three innings, totaling 17 hits in seven innings. Getting four of those hits was Terashima, going 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in, giving the sophomore a .516 batting average - second best in the nation - helping the outfielder to seven games where he’s been perfect at the plate (1.000).

Taking advantage of the run support was Mark Giallanzo (Oneonta, NY), earning his first win of the season. The sophomore went four innings, allowing four earned runs off of six hit. Nicholas Whalen (New Hartford, NY) came in relief of the final three innings, only allowing one hit to the Hawks.

Leading the Generals in RBI’s in game two was Gage Lanning (Central Square, NY). The catcher went 1-for-2 at the plate with three runs batted in, giving him 14 on the season. The freshman has come on as of late, collecting 11 RBI in his last eight games.

Up next for the Generals is a sub-regional playoff where the winner advances in a three-game series. Herkimer does not yet know who they will play, but the team will host it at Herkimer College this Saturday, May 9th. Herkimer is currently #1 in the Region III, followed by Niagara, Erie, Schenectady, Hudson Valley, Onondaga, Mohawk Valley and Jefferson Community College.
