Generals stay alive with complete game shutout by Harrington

(Herkimer's Michael Harrington collected 13 strike outs Saturday, a season-high for the sophomore).

LITTLE FALLS, NY – Needing a superb pitching performance to remain in the 2015 Region III Final Four, the Herkimer Generals turned to sophomore Michael Harrington on Saturday (5/16) - and the ace didn’t disappoint - throwing a complete game shutout against Niagara County Community College at Veterans Memorial Park for the 1-0 victory.

Herkimer (42-4) saw Harrington take the reins of the game early, retiring the first eight batters he faced. The Thunderwolves managed to get one runner in scoring position throughout the nine innings played after Harrington hit a batter and allowed a single on consecutive at-bats in the fifth, but the righty got through it, striking out another Niagara player to end the inning, finishing with a season-high 13 in the game.

In his last seven appearances, Harrington has not allowed an earned run, accumulating 24 1/3 innings pitched for the Generals since April 23rd. Added to this, opponents have only tallied 10 total hits against him.

With Harrington holding the Thunderwolves at bay, all the Generals offense had to do was score one run in the game, getting it in the first inning on an interesting play. Taishi Terashima (Hiranai, Japan) and Tyler Phillips (Hancock, NY) opened the game up with back-to-back singles, manning first and second base for catcher Chris Rave (Middletown, NY) after Patrick Dorrain (Kingston, NY) flied out. Rave hit a high fly ball which would’ve left the park, but Niagara’s centerfielder made a leaping grab to rob Rave of the hit. Coincidentally however the hit was deep enough to score Terashima from second base, giving the Generals the only run of the game they would need.

Herkimer almost managed to score another run in the second, but Christian Malave (Milford, CT) was thrown out at the plate on a hit by Eric Downey (Colonie, NY).

With the win over the Thunderwolves, Herkimer will play Schenectady County Community College. The Royals lost to Erie, putting them in the consolation bracket with the Generals on Saturday (5/16). Game time between both teams is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
