Generals sweep first half of Clinton series, second half postponed

Plattsburgh, NY – The Herkimer Generals and the Clinton CC Cougars were scheduled to play a four-game series, with a doubleheader in the north country on Tuesday and Games Three and Four in Herkimer on Thursday. The Generals won the first two games, but the lingering winter weather forced the postponement of the final two contests.

Game One

Baseball 4-9-2013 KyleGarrisonHCCC freshman Kyle Garrison (Schenectady) went to the mound in Game One. The tall righty pitched a complete game to win his first collegiate game. Garrison worked seven innings, allowing three hits, four walks, and one earned run, while striking out eight. He struck out the side to end the game.

Clinton's Chris Roenbeck hit a first-inning home run to give the home side a 1-0 lead. The Cougars got another run in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Herkimer finally got to Clinton starter Kristen Sherman in the fifth with leadoff singles by AJ Fabrizio (Martin County, FL) and Ryan Watson (Whitesboro). Both runners came around to score and tie the game.

The Generals got the go-ahead run in the sixth inning when Hayden Caffey (Thrall, TX) doubled and scored on a throwing error. Garrison retired the final nine batters in a row to end the ballgame.

Game Two

Clinton scored early again in Game Two, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Herkimer responded in the second frame by plating three runs.

Herkimer starter Mike DeCarlo allowed one unearned run in the third, and the Cougars led 4-3. HCCC's Hayden Caffey's two-RBI double then keyed a five-run fourth. The Generals led 8-4 and did not allow Clinton to get any closer.

Herkimer added two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh to take a 13-4 victory. Dan Smith stroked a two-run home run in the seventh. It was Smith's second round-tripper in the last four days.

DeCarlo went 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, two walks, and two earned runs, with nine strikeouts, to earn his first collegiate victory. Caffey went four-for-five on the day, with two doubles and three runs batted in.

Games Three and Four of the Clinton series were scheduled for Thursday afternoon, but were postponed due to poor field conditions. The games have been rescheduled for May 4, with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.

The Generals are to travel to East Field in Glens Falls on Saturday for a doubleheader with the SUNY Adirondack Timberwolves. HCCC will then host the 'Wolves on Sunday with the first game starting at noon.
