Baseball sweeps first home doubleheader

(Herkimer's Patrick Dorrian finished game one with a season-high five runs batted in on Sunday at home).

(Herkimer's Gage Lanning ended game two with a single to left field which scored one run, enforcing a 10-run rule).

HERKIMER, NY – Amassing double digit hit totals in their first home doubleheader, the Herkimer Generals baseball team cruised to a 21-5 and 12-2 sweep of SUNY Adirondack Sunday (4/10).

Coming off a five inning loss to the Timberwolves on Saturday (4/9), Herkimer scored 11 runs in the first inning against starter Tyler Tremain, then tallied 10 more runs with their final nine outs to shorten game one to five innings due to a 10-run rule.

Standing out at the plate in game one was Patrick Dorrian (Kingston, NY), Gage Lanning (Central Square, NY) and John Novenche (Clifton Park, NY). Dorrian led the Generals with five runs batted in, going 3-for-3 at the plate, followed by four RBI by Lanning and three by Novenche. Lanning and Novenche both went 2-for-4 in the first game.

Using his team’s 17 hits in game one to earn his first win of the season was Zak Shaw (Fort Hunter, NY). The sophomore shook off a rough first inning to throw a complete game. Shaw allowed five earned runs from nine hits, striking out one.

In game two with Greg Musk (Rotterdam, NY) starting, Herkimer didn’t need as many hits since Musk only allowed one in his first four innings of work. SUNY Adirondack didn’t score a run against the freshman until the fifth with the Generals up 10-0. The left-hander got his second win of the season, allowing two earned runs from four hits in five innings for the complete game.

Getting five of Herkimer’s 10 hits in game two were Lanning, Brandon Hubbard (Potomac, MD) and Anthony Yezzo Jr. (Rotterdam, NY). Lanning and Hubbard had two hits, while in his only plate appearance, Yezzo Jr. got one as well. Hubbard led the team with three RBI and both Lanning and Yezzo Jr. shared two. Lanning’s final hit ended the game in the fifth after his single to left field scored one run.

Up next for the Generals is another doubleheader on Tuesday (4/12). They’ll host Columbia-Greene at Herkimer College with game time scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m. The Twins are 1-5 on the season.
