Conroy shutout leads to another sweep at home for baseball

(Gage Lanning ended game two in the fifth inning by hitting a grand slam to give him four RBI in the contest).

(Jake Conroy had nine strikeouts in his game one shutout of the Twins on Wednesday at home).

HERKIMER, NY – Hosting their second doubleheader on Wednesday (4/13) against Columbia-Greene, the Herkimer Generals baseball team 10-run ruled the Twins in both contests, winning 13-0 and 15-4.

Herkimer (10-8, 5-1) managed six extra base hits in game one which helped the team score three or more runs in three of the four innings they played in. Accumulating extra base hits in the contest were John Novenche (Clifton Park, NY), Patrick Dorrian (Kingston, NY), Petar Rumora (Palisades Park, NJ) and Gage Lanning (Central Square, NY). It helped Dorrian and Rumora led the team with three RBI each, while Novenche and Lanning each drove in a run against the Twins.

As for starter Jake Conroy (Kirkwood, NY), he got his second win of the season (1-1) by throwing a gem. The freshman only allowed three hits through five innings of work, striking out a season-high nine batters for the complete game shutout.

In game two, Herkimer got more solid pitching from Chris Henry (Yorktown Heights, NY) and Joseph Gagliano (West Milford, NJ). Henry got the start and allowed four runs, one of them earned, in 4 1/3 innings. It helped him to his first win of the season before Gagliano got in the game for the last two outs. The sophomore only allowed one hit in his appearance.

Just like in game one, the offense amassed double digits in hits in game two. The biggest came from Lanning in the fifth inning when he hit a grand slam on the second pitch of his at-bat to end the game in walk off fashion. Lanning finished the game with four RBI, going 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored.

Lanning wasn’t the only General to go yard however as Christian Malave (Milford, CT) hit his third home run of the season as well.

Herkimer will play the Twins again on Thursday (4/14), this time on the road. Columbia-Green will host their doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m.
