#7 Baseball splits with Vikings at home on Saturday

HERKIMER, NY – Going 20 days without a loss - the #7 Herkimer Generals baseball team lost their first game after a 20-game win streak to Hudson Valley on Saturday (4/30) - splitting with the Vikings, losing game one 6-5 and winning game two 6-0.

Herkimer (27-9, 20-2) trailed Hudson Valley briefly in the fourth inning after they put up a four spot on starter Joe DeSarro (Frankfort, NY) in game one, but the Generals scored three runs in the next two innings to lead 5-4 with closer Dan Nuzzi (Burnt Hills, NY) in line for the win. The sophomore then went to lose his first game of the season (3-1), allowing two earned runs from one hit while walking three Vikings in his two innings pitched. It was the first two runs Nuzzi allowed all season, going 11 previous innings without a run against him.

In game two, Herkimer’s pitching rebounded with Salvatore Lovaglio (Dix Hills, NY) throwing a one hitter. It was his best appearance of the season, going all seven innings to get his third win of the season (3-1) in a complete game effort. Lovaglio struck out four, only facing 23 batters in the game.

With Lovaglio holding Hudson Valley at bay, Gage Lanning (Central Square, NY) came through in game two, going 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. The sophomore went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader with six runs batted in, seeing Herkimer tally 10 runs batted in during their 14 innings Saturday. Lanning now has 41 RBI and a .805 slugging percentage on the season. 41 is the 18th best and .805 is the eighth best in the nation.

Other players to knock in runs were Patrick Dorrian (Kingston, NY), Christian Malave (Milford, CT) and Greg Musk (Rotterdam, NY). Both Dorrian and Malave drove one run in game one, watching Dorrian go 2-for-3 and Malave go 2-for-4 at the plate. As for Musk, he drove in two runs in game two, going 1-for-3. Dorrian now has 30 runs batted in, Malave has 32 and Musk has 17.
