Conroy and Novenche lead Generals to conference title

TROY, NY – Needing two wins to clinch the Mountain Valley Conference against Hudson Valley on Tuesday (5/10), the #6 Herkimer Generals baseball team traveled to Troy, NY and took two games from the Vikings at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium 9-2 and 6-5.

Herkimer (30-9, 22-2) captured its fourth consecutive conference title with solid pitching in game one and clutch hitting in game two. Jake Conroy (Kirkwood, NY) took the mound in game one and didn’t allow a run until the eighth inning, needing Jack Jones (College Grove, TN) to record the final four outs of the game. Conroy collected his fifth win of the season (5-1) - allowing two earned runs off of three hits - working around four walks in his 5 2/3 innings pitched. As for Jones, he only allowed one hit in his appearance.

Helping get the win in game one for Conroy was seven runs in the fifth. Christian Malave (Milford, CT) had a RBI single and both Greg Musk (Rotterdam, NY) and John Novenche (Clifton, Park, NY) drove in two on singles as well. Malave finished 1-for-3, Musk finished 1-for-4 and Novenche finished 2-for-4.

As mentioned previously, game two wasn’t as easy as the Generals came back from a 4-0 deficit, scoring six runs in the final two innings for the sweep. Getting the clutch hit was Novenche. The freshman with the team down 5-3 tripled in the fifth to score Brandon Hubbard (Potomac, MD), Joseph Foran (Fort Ann, NY) and Jones. Novenche finished with a game-high four runs batted in, making his only hit of the second game count when his team needed it the most.

Herkimer used three pitchers in the second game. Chris Henry (Yorktown Heights, NY) earned the win after Kody Shaw (Fort Hunter, NY) was knocked out of the game, allowing four runs in 1 2/3 during his sixth appearance in 2016. Henry went on the throw the next 3 1/3, only allowing one run off of one hit before Jon Sell (Burnt Hills, NY) was needed to preserve the win, getting his first save of the season. Henry is now 2-2.

Up next for the Generals is a best of three sub-regional series which the higher seed will host this coming Saturday (5/14) and Sunday (5/15). Herkimer will play the west, and should be the #1 seed as they have the best Region 3 record. Opponents and game times have yet to be determined.
