Baseball splits opener with Lincoln Land

AUBURNDALE, FL – In their first regular season action of the 2016 season, the #3 Herkimer Generals baseball team split with Lincoln Land Community College on Friday (3/11), losing the first game 4-0 and winning the second game 3-1.

Pitching in game one for Herkimer (0-1) was Zak Shaw (Fort Hunter, NY). The sophomore allowed three runs on four hits in four innings pitched, needing to give way to Joe DeSarro (Frankfort, NY) in the final two innings. DeSarro allowed one run off of two hits.

Offensively the Generals only managed one hit against Loggers starter Ben Hecht. Getting that hit was Adam Nell (Vernon, NY). The sophomore ended the day going 1-for-3.

In game two, the bats came to life, collecting eight hits in seven innings. Getting multiple hits was Jake Rouse (Milford, CT) and Gage Lanning (Central Square, NY). Rouse scores twice while going 3-for-3 at the plate, while Lanning went 2-for-2 with a season-high three runs batted in. Other Generals to collect a hit were John Novenche (Clifton Park, NY), Jack Jones (College Grove, TN) and Elviz Belen (Putnam Valley, NY).

Getting the win the in the second game was Salvatore Lovaglio (Dix Hills, NY). The freshman allowed one hit and no runs in 4 1/3 innings pitched. Coming in relief to close the game out was Joseph Butler (Burnt Hills, NY) and Dan Nuzzi (Burnt Hills, NY). Butler went 2/3 and Nuzzi went two innings, getting his first save of the season in the process. Nuzzi didn’t allow a hit during his appearance.

Herkimer’s next doubleheader is Saturday (3/12) against Oakton Community College. Game times are 12:30 and 4:30 p.m.
