Baseball sweeps first doubleheader, defeat Knights 6-4 and 5-0

AUBURNDALE, FL – After losing two straight games to Oakton CC on Saturday (3/12), the #3 Herkimer Generals baseball team collected their first doubleheader sweep of the season on Sunday (3/13), defeating Northern Essex 6-4 and 5-0.

Herkimer didn’t capture their first lead of the game until the fifth inning when they scored five runs. Supplying the fire power was Justin Kiesow (Frankfort, NY), Adam Nell (Vernon, NY), Jake Rouse (Milford, CT) and Leon Babcock-McIntosh (Bloomfield, CT). Each drove in a run but Kiesow who drive in two runs, finishing the first game without a hit despite three plate appearances. John Novenche (Clifton Park, NY) had the most hits for the Generals, going 2-for-4 at the plate with one run scored.

Getting the win in game one was Jake Conroy (Kirkwood, NY). The freshman battled through four innings before giving way to Kody Shaw (Fort Hunter, NY), allowing four earned runs in four innings of work, earning his first win of the season despite giving out four walks. As for Shaw, the sophomore came in for the save, allowing only two hits in three innings.

In game two, the bats didn’t come to life again until late, giving starter Greg Musk (Rotterdam, NY) only one run of support until the sixth inning when six runs plated. It didn’t matter though, as Musk got the complete game shutout, only allowing one hit in seven innings pitched, also striking out seven knights.

Getting multiple runs batted in during the game was Christian Malave (Milford, CT) and Petar Rumora (Palisades, NJ). Malave went 1-for-3 two RBI, while Rumora went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Anthony Yezzo (Rotterdam, NY) got the other RBI, going 1-for-3 with no runs scored.

Up next for Herkimer is regional foe Genesee Community College. The Cougars are 1-3, getting their first win of the season Saturday against Monroe. Sunday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1:30 and 4:30 p.m.
