Herkimer edged by D-II Monroe

Rochester, NY – The Generals accepted a tough challenge this weekend by playing in the Monroe CC invitational Pete Pavia Tournament. Both of their games were against higher-division teams. Herkimer got by D-I Westchester on Saturday by winning the end game, but on Sunday the Generals' end game let them down, and D-II Monroe prevailed 67-61.

Monroe's tall Tribunes and the Generals traded baskets, and the lead changed hands, for over eight minutes. Then the home team took the lead for good. Their lead was never large, and the visitors kept fighting. Herkimer trailed by just three at the half, 31-28. The Tribunes would expand their lead slightly in the second half.

The Herkimer Five trimmed that lead to 63-60 with three minutes to play, but the Generals could not muster their usual finishing performance. Perhaps the effects of playing their second game within 18 hours were setting in. Regardless, Herkimer troops missed four field goal attempts in those ending minutes, and the home side had the win.

Monroe's record is now 11-1. Herkimer's is 10-2.

Jonathan Feiler led all scorers with 24 points. Mike Thomas tallied 11 and Steve Whittingham scored 10 for the Green & Gold.

The Generals now begin their holiday break. Their season will resume on January 8 when they will travel to Plattsburgh to play the Clinton CC Cougars.
