Generals post win over Columbia-Greene

mbball 02 06 2013 DavisHerkimer, NY – It took the Generals a few minutes to get their offense in gear, but eight minutes into the Tuesday evening game they took the lead and owned the contest from that point on. The final score was 72-48, and Coach Matt Lee's team now has 20 wins with seven games remaining in the regular season.

A good crowd was there to see Jonathan Feiler score the game's first basket, but the home team had trouble scoring for a few minutes after Feiler's feat. The visiting Twins of Columbia-Greene CC were making their shots and were grabbing defensive rebounds. The Twins led 10-4. Then the Generals got going.

Mike Thomas leaped high to put in a tip-back. Demetrius Mitchell took a nice pass from Jason Foden and scored. Feiler found the hoop again. Dequan Jefferson sank a three, and Herkimer was on top 13-10. They increased their lead from that point on.

The Herkimer Five made several first-half plays that delighted basketball fans. Johnnie Davis was making his presence felt. Mitchell stole the ball, then sprinted 60 feet and scored. Jefferson made a long drive and put the home team ahead 21-12. Jefferson then made one of his patented power drives and scored again. Davis sank two threes in a row.

Mitchell also sank a three-pointer. The senior from Syracuse has the second-best scoring percentage from beyond the arc in Region 3 with a mark of 44.9%.

The second 20 minutes began with Jefferson connecting from behind the arc. Minutes later the senior forward from Utica started a play to remember. Jefferson began the breakout play with a pass to Floyd, who sprinted up the right side of the lane. Floyd passed across the lane to Mitchell, who immediately passed back to Feiler. The big man took one step and soared up for a careful, two-handed dunk. 42-26.

Feiler scored again. Thomas tallied. Feiler hit another. Mitchell scored on a beautiful steal-and-go. 51-33 Herkimer.

Johnnie Davis sank three of his four attempts from the foul line. Davis has the second-best free throw percentage in the region: 84.4%.

The Generals kept their foot on the gas. By the time the final buzzer sounded, 10 Generals had put points on the board.

The team will travel to SUNY Adirondack for a 3:00 p.m. game on Saturday afternoon. Herkimer will play two more road games next week, facing always-tough opponents Mohawk Valley and Fulton-Montgomery, and will return home to host Clinton CC on Saturday, February 16.
