Generals thwart Raiders 75-47

mbball 02 15 2013 JeffersonJohnstown, NY – The Herkimer Five took care of business Thursday evening and dispatched the Fulton-Montgomery ("FM") Raiders 75-47. Neither team shot as well as they usually do, but the Generals' offense was good enough.

The visitors from Herkimer were aggressive defenders. They held the Raiders to just 17 points over the first 20 minutes while scoring 38 themselves. The Herkimer total got a major boost from Demetrius Mitchell who netted five three-pointers in the half. The senior from Syracuse is capable of such feats. Earlier this season, at Clinton CC, he sank seven threes in eight attempts during the first 20 minutes.

Herkimer's first scoring shots were rather spectacular. Mitchell got things started with a three-pointer from the right side, then one from the left side. Next, Mitchell set up Dequan Jefferson with a nice alley-oop pass that Jefferson slammed through the hoop. Jefferson added another FG, Mitchell tossed in another three, Johnnie Davis made a nice drive to the hoop, and Herkimer led 15-6.

The Generals were also playing tight defense and were working hard to win defensive rebounds. They had the game under control.

HCCC's first three points of the second half all came from the foul line. Soon Jerome Floyd took a pass from Jonathan Feiler and scored. Herkimer had a 20-point lead, 45-25.

The win raised Herkimer's record to 23-3. Head Coach Matt Lee's team is striving for a strong finish to the season in preparation for the Region 3 playoffs. Two home games remain in the regular season.

Herkimer will host Clinton CC on Saturday afternoon. The tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. Then on Sunday the team will travel to Saranac Lake to play the always-tough Saints of North Country CC. The final home game of the season will be played on Wednesday evening when the Hudson Valley Vikings visit the Herkimer hilltop.
