Herkimer men down Clinton CC 89-72

mbball 02 16 2013 JeffersonHerkimer, NY – The visiting Clinton CC Cougars and the Herkimer Generals started their Saturday afternoon contest with a flurry of scoring. The two squads scored a combined 35 points in the first six and one-half minutes.

The Generals' offense was effective, and so was the Cougars'. Clinton tied the game at 20-20, and they came close again at 32-30. Then Herkimer went on a scoring run that gave the Generals control of the game. The final score was 89-72, Herkimer.

Demetrius Mitchell scored the game's first points. He was fouled while shooting from behind the arc. Mitchell sank all three free throws to get the high-scoring half started, and he went on to lead all scorers with 25.

Dequan Jefferson and Jonathan Feiler quickly added points. Jerome Floyd scored from behind the center of the arc. Todd Hunt put in a rebound. Jon Feiler hauled in a rebound and spun to net a hook shot. Mitchell sank two more threes. Floyd added a hard-earned basket. Davis hit for three. The teams left the court at halftime with Herkimer ahead 47-30.

mbball 02 16 2013 FloydFeiler opened the second half with two points. Mitchell sent a great alley-oop pass to Jefferson, and Jefferson stuffed it. The Generals were in charge.

Head Coach Matt Lee got every General into the game. This was the team's fourth game in seven days, and they faced a road game on Sunday – a challenging game at North Country. The Cougars ran hard until the end, but the Generals were too strong for them on Saturday. The game ended 89-72.

The Generals now have the sterling season record of 24-3, with only one loss to other Division III foes. They have three games remaining in the regular season, all against Mountain Valley Conference teams. Herkimer travels to North Country on Sunday, hosts Hudson Valley on Wednesday, and closes out the season at Schenectady on Saturday.

The postseason picture is starting to come into focus. While the Generals were defeating the Cougars on Saturday, the Hudson Valley Vikings were at home upsetting the Delhi Broncos, 49-47. Herkimer has lost only one conference game – a narrow loss at Delhi. The Broncos, however, have lost three conference games, to Herkimer, Mohawk Valley, and Hudson Valley. The other top conference teams have all lost at least five times in conference play. The Generals have their destiny in their own hands.
