Herkimer Men's Lacrosse Alumni Fred Opie gives Presentation
Herkimer Generals Men's Lacrosse alumni Fred Opie, class of 1983, visited campus this past weekend to celebrate Herkimer's 50th Anniversary. Opie, a member of the prestigious Herkimer Alumni Wall of Honor supported fellow inductees Dartray Belk and Donald J. Snyder onto the Wall of Honor Friday night. He also provided many Herkimer students with influential life lessons Saturday morning as he gave his speech on the Seven Steps to Success. Opie played for the legendary Herkimer lacrosse coach Paul Wehrum in 1982 and 1983. He was honored with the status of 1st team All-American as a freshman, and 2nd team All-American as a sophomore. Opie then transferred to Syracuse University where he finished his degree in Physical Education and earned Varsity Letters for lacrosse as an Orangeman. He then earned his Master’s Degree from Shippensburg University in 1991 and the Ph.D. in History from Syracuse University in 1999. Opie continued to pursue the sport winning club championships with the Long Island and Maryland Lacrosse Clubs, and a World Championship with the Men’s National Lacrosse Team in Perth, Australia (1990). Fred Opie currently works as a faculty advisor for the Marist College Red Foxes men’s lacrosse team.
