Strong Second Half Seals Victory Over Bergen

(Sophomore Ben Polk gives Herkimer a 1-0 lead in the first half Sunday on an assist from Moulid Somow).

(Jermaine Windster's second goal on Sunday gave Herkimer a lead which would not be relinquished).

HERKIMER, NY – Getting two goals from both Jermaine Windster (Rotterdam, Holland) and Ben Polk (Banbury, UK) each, the Herkimer Generals men’s soccer team defeated Bergen Community College at Wehrum Stadium Sunday afternoon 5-2, concluding Herkimer’s annual Coliseum Classic.

Herkimer (2-0, 0-0) was on cruise control in this one until the Bulldogs ripped off two goals in the matter of 11 minutes in the first half to give Herkimer their first deficit of the season 2-1. It only lasted two minutes after Moulid Somow (Utica, NY) found Windster for the tie (2-2) in the 34th, giving Somow both assists in the half.

The momentum stayed with Herkimer in the second half with three unanswered goals to put the game out of reach by the 83rd. Windster got the first goal on a penalty kick in the 46th, while Polk scored on an assist from Shane Jenkinson (Dublin, Ireland) in the 57th and Yu Sasaki (Funabashi, Japan) scored on Somow’s third assist of the game in the 82nd to make it 5-2.

Starting his first game of the season at goalie was Austin Santor (Chazy, NY). The sophomore was unable to keep the shutout streak alive, allowing two goals, but his solid play in the second half helped Herkimer pull away from the potential nail bitter. Santor finished with three saves.

Herkimer’s next game is against Onondaga Community College. It will be the first time Head Coach Pepe Aragon will get a shot at winning his 300th game. Aragon currently is 299-27-14. It will also be the last time he’ll get a chance to win at home, playing on the road after their game with the Lazers. The game will be played on Thursday, September 4th under the lights of Wehrum Stadium at 7 p.m.
