McAvoy scores twice in win over Titans

HERKIMER, NY - Herkimer, currently ranked #1 nationally in NJCAA, started the 2013 campaign with a 3-1 win over County College of Morris in the Coliseum Kickoff Classic on Saturday.

The Generals were led by Peter McAvoy (Dundee, Scotland) who tallied two goals on the day. The first of his two goals came on a converted penalty kick in the 42nd minute of the first half to give Herkimer a 1-0 heading into the half.

After the break, it didn't take long for the Generals to strike again. Nearly a minute in, Jermaine Windster (Rotterdam, Holland) headed in a goal off a well-placed Jacob Butler-Bowdon (Adelaide, South Australia) cross, putting the Generals up by two (2-0).

Tallying the final goal was McAvoy, off another header from James Wilson (Woodford Green, England), pushing the lead to 3-0.

Michael O'Keefe, a Morris Forward, tallied the final goal of the game, spoiling the possible shut out with just over three minutes left in the game.

Herkimer plays nationally ranked Brookdale Community College (#6) on Sunday. The Jersey Blues will look to avenge a National Championship Quarterfinal loss last year in which Herkimer won 1-0.

"I thought our guys looked good today for the home opener," Head Coach Pepe Aragon said. "Tomorrow will be a tough game with Brookdale, especially with the high temperatures we're expecting."
