Women second, men third in regional track & field championships

Track 5 4 2013 Demetrius MitchellAlfred, NY – The Generals made a strong showing at the Region 3 track and field championship meet on Saturday. The women's team placed second, behind Mohawk Valley and ahead of Alfred State. The men's squad took third place behind Alfred State and Delhi. Five colleges competed in the regionals.

Herkimer freshman Wendall Williams had another heroic day. Williams won five individual events and ran on the second-place 400 meter relay team. He set a meet record in the long jump. Further, Williams earned the rare dual honor of being named both the Track Athlete of the Meet and the Field Athlete of the Meet.

Joining Williams on the 400 meter team were Chad Knapp, Joseph Shinn, and Demetrius Mitchell. The quartet ran the relay in 43.07, narrowly beaten by Alfred State (43.01) and ahead of Delhi and Finger Lakes (43.44 and 45.36). Head Coach Sharon Howell also cited Shinn as having had a great meet.

Coach Howell credited women's team members Mary Lenhart, Mary Galway, Amanda Knox and Victoria Seabrooks with having very strong performances.

Mary Lenhart had an outstanding meet. Lenhart won the javelin throw with a personal best, took second in the shot put, missing first place by a mere 0.02m. Further, she placed in every event in which she competed: 100 hurdles, 400 relay, shot, discus, javelin, hammer, high jump, long jump and triple jump. She also won the regional heptathlon which was held two weeks ago.

Mary Galway won the 10,000m and placed second in the javelin, as well as placing in the hammer, shot, discus, and 5000m.

Amanda Knox won the 400 hurdles, placed second in the 200m and 400m, and ran on the 400m relay team. Knox ran her best time of this season in the 200m & 400m.

Victoria Seabrooks won the long jump and placed in the 400, 400 hurdles and high jump and ran on the 400m relay team.

All of the women stepped up to bring in points: Toree Kennerly took second place in the 10,00m, Stacey Hensley was fourth in the 3,000 steeple chase, and Tattana Maldonado placed fifth in both the 800 & 1500m. Danielle Gizzi did well in the 100m and triple jump, as did Brittany Barnett in the 100 and 200m and Brittany West in the 5000m.
