Herkimer Lets One Slip Away In Extra Innings, But Takes Game 3 Against DI Power Potomac State of WVU
West Virginia University Recruit Eric Hinkle finally cooled the
bats of Herkimer as Potomac State defeated the Generals 8-2 in game
one of this past weekend's three game series. Jeff Sergott was 2-3,
Kris Barone was 2-4, and Ron Patterson went 2-3 in game one. Game
two went in a different direction as Herkimer took a 8-1 lead into
the bottom of the sixth inning. Al Ferenti started on the mound for
Herkimer and cruised through the first 5 innings. Potomac began the
sixth with a leadoff single then a throwing error on SS Lee Foxton
would keep runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Cleanup hitter
Dominic Hayes would then single to load the bases when Jason
Lombard would deliver a triple over the head of Ron Patterson.
Ferenti who controlled the game until his defense let him down,
then struck out the next two Potomac players. With two outs Potomac
would then single and pinch hitter Kurtis Voytell would hit a 2run
homer to close the game to 8-7. Tom Wiacek entered the game to try
to close out the game but a leadoff walk led to a throwing error by
catcher Parker Umbra allowing the runner to advance to third with
no outs. Wiacek retired one hitter then allowed a sacrifice fly to
tie the game. Potomac would score the winning run in the bottom of
the eighth on a base hit by Cody Dalton as Potomac won 9-8. Amar
Lewis was 3-5 with a double and a homerun and Lee Foxton went 2-3
in game two.
