Herkimer Baseball Finishes 3rd at World Series; Sergott and Ferenti Named to All Tournament Team
Herkimer left everything on the field during their last game of the NJCAA DIII World Series in Tyler, Texas. Herkimer played the host school Tyler Junior College for a chance to play for the National Championship and another shot for both teams against #1 Gloucester CC. Herkimer got on the scoreboard first in the 1st inning and then followed in the second inning by a RBI double by Jeff Sergott followed by a sacrifice fly by Lane Potter to take a 3-0 lead. Tyler would answer with 1 run in the bottom of the second off starter Joe Perrotta. Herkimer added two more runs in the 4th keyed by another RBI double by Sergott, but Tyler would again answer in the bottom of the 4th with 2 more runs to bring the game to 5-3. Tyler took the lead in the 5th inning with 3 runs chasing starter Joe Perrotta from the game and taking control of the game with a 6-5 lead. Herkimer answered back with 2 more runs to take back the lead in the 6th keyed by a Lane Potter RBI single. Lane Potter added another RBI single in the 7th to take a 8-6 lead. Tyler added a run in the 7th then managed a two out rally in the 8th that started with a 2 out base hit followed by two walks to load the bases. Tyler shortstop Dougherty who went 4-5 with 6 RBI’s put Tyler in the lead for good with a key 2 run basehit that would end Herkimer’s season.
Jeff Sergott and Al Ferenti were named to the All Tournament team and Herkimer finished their season 35-14. This win total ties the school record in wins and also tied for the best finish in the World Series with a 3rd place finish which also tied the 2007 team. Head Coach Jason Rathbun was also named District A Coach of the Year for the 3rd time in 6 seasons at Herkimer.
