Generals roll over Red Barons 105-61

Corning, NY – Herkimer’s Generals unleashed their entire repertoire against the Corning CC Red Barons and won 105-61 on Sunday afternoon.  The visitors found the Wayne Kenner Court to their liking, and 11 different Generals put points on the board.

Johnnie Davis started the game at guard for the Generals, and he scored the first points with a nice shot from behind the arc.  Dequan Jefferson scored on a free throw.  Deandre Preaster scored with a putback, and the visitors were ahead 6-0.

Head Coach Matt Lee substituted liberally, and every General contributed.  The first 10 minutes were played at a 100-point pace, and Herkimer kept up that pace all afternoon.

The Red Barons were overmatched, but it was a basketball fan’s delight to see the Herkimer squad doing so many different things well.  The Generals stormed to a 50-22 lead at halftime.

Preaster was a force, but he was just one of four Generals to tally 14 points in the contest.  The others were Jefferson, Josh Henderson, and Goey Charles.

The second half was another 20 minutes of the Generals displaying their prowess.  They reached the 70-point mark when Paris Parks sank a three from the right side.  Seth Hidde scored points 80 and 81 with free throws.  A Johnnie Davis three-pointer got the team past the 90 mark.  Todd Hunt was the centurion – his close-in shot tallied the 100th point.

Team name trivia

Both the Corning and Herkimer teams are named after heroes of the American Revolutionary War.  The Red Barons are named in honor of Baron von Steuben, who contributed greatly to the training of the Continental Army.  (Corning CC is located in Steuben County.)  The Herkimer Generals are named for General Nicholas Herkimer, who led the Continental forces at the Battle of Oriskany.

Next game

The Generals’ next game will be on Tuesday, at Fulton-Montgomery.  The 12-7 Raiders have a strong squad and are always tough at home.  The 7:00 p.m. game promises to be a good one.
