Stingy Defense Leads Herkimer Men's Lacrosse To Win In Season Opener On The Road
The Generals defeated West Point Military Academy 12 – 5 on Thursday evening in West Point, NY.
Herkimer opened up the scoring just 10 seconds into play off of a fast break face off win taken by sophomore midfielder Zeppy O’Geen (Massena, NY) O’Geen won the faceoff and found freshman attackman Trent Thomas (Akwesasne, Ontario) on the crease for an easy one timer.
The game was very physical and the win is credited to Herkimer’s hard nosed defensive play. Great performances were added by Jake Burns ( Guilderland, NY ), Sean Shewey ( Redmond, WA ) , Jordan Cook ( Waterloo, NY ), Matt Fiore ( Staten Island, NY ) and Zac Pasko who had 3 clutch performances in a man down situation to keep West Point off the score board. Freshman goalie Dustyn Lyons ( Hood River, OR ) had an outstanding night in the net and finished with 19 saves.
Scoring for Herkimer was Trent Thomas with 4 goals and 1 assist, assistant captain Marty Hill ( Six Nations, Ontario ) 2 goals and 3 assists, assistant captain Jeff Seager ( Balston Spa, NY ) 1 goal and three assists, Mat Thompson ( Akwesasne, Ontario ) finished with 2 goals, Jordan Duffy had 2 goals, sophomore captain Andy Jamieson ( Six Nations, Ontario ) did what he does best and added four assists. Freshman Pete Vacca ( Waterloo, NY ) scored his first goal as a General with time running out in the win.
Herkimer’s record is now 1 – 0.
Herkimer plays next at home in Wehrum stadium on Wednesday March 24th at 5pm against region 3 opponent Tompkins – Cortland C.C.
