Onondaga and Genesee battle for Region III Championship
Update: May 8, 3:57 p.m.
Onondaga wins Championship
Onondaga continued their dominance in the second half. They scored seven goals in the third quarter and six more in the fourth stanza. The final score was 27-7.
Congratulations to the Onondaga CC Lazers, 2011 Region III Men’s Lacrosse Champions.
Update: May 8, 2:36 p.m.
This is a halftime update. The two teams played on even terms for the first 10 minutes, but the Onondaga Lazers kicked their offense into high gear and established a dominant lead. The half ended 14-5.
Connor Latimer gave Genesee a brief lead after just a minute of play. He took a nice pass from behind the net and scored with an underhanded shot.
OCC tied the game with a nifty three-man play. Caleb Wiles and Sam Penizotto made cross-field passes, then fed Matt Crough in front, who buried his shot.

The first quarter ended 6-4, but OCC erupted for eight second-quarter tallies while holding Genesee to just one goal in the period. The Lazers went to the break leading 14-5.

Herkimer, NY – Herkimer County Community College is hosting the men’s Region III lacrosse championship semifinals today. This story will be updated with text and photos as the games take place.
2011 Men’s Lacrosse Regional Semifinals, Saturday, May 7
The first game is scheduled for a 1:00 start. It will feature the #1-seeded Lazers of Onondaga CC (15-0) meeting the #4 seed, the Broome CC Hornets (25-4). The second men’s semifinal is to face off at 3:30. That game will pit the #2-seeded Monroe CC Tribunes (10-5) against the #3 seed, the Genesee CC Cougars (11-9).

update: 5:18 p.m.
Genesee continued their control of the game in the second half. The two teams traded pairs of goals in the third quarter, then Genesee tallied two more early in the final stanza.
Midway through the fourth it was apparent that Genesee will be playing in the championship game on Sunday. That thought makes Herkimer fans think “What if?” because the Generals lost to these same Cougars by the narrowest of margins during the regular season. Genesee edged Herkimer 10-9 in overtime on April 14.

The #3-seeded Genesee Cougars will meet the #1-seeded Onondaga Lazers for the Region III championship. That game will face off at 1:30 on Sunday, here in HCCC’s Wehrum Stadium.
update: 4:26 p.m.
#2 Monroe Tribunes v. #3 Genesee Cougars
Monroe came into the game with a slightly higher seeding, but Genesee was the better team in the first half. The Cougars got on the board just three minutes into the contest when Connor Latimer netted a goal for the blue clad side.
Both teams played a fast-paced, exciting game. Both goaltenders – Genesee’s Zach Wilson and Monroe’s Matt Hamilton – played very well throughout the first quarter.

Genesee notched their second goal 10 minutes into the quarter. Latimer passed to Christian Reiller, who scored from 12 yards out, on the left side.
The Cougars upped their pace and their scoring in the second quarter. Monroe tallied, but Genesee put four into the net. Their final score came on a deflection with less than two seconds remaining in the half.

Final Score: Onondaga 23 – Broome 11

Onondaga CC has now earned a berth in the Region III Championship game, which will be played at 1:30 on Sunday. They will meet the winner of the #2 Monroe versus #3 Genesee game, which will begin at 3:30 today.
update: 2:19 p.m.
#1 Onondaga v. #4 Broome
Onondaga established their superiority with a goal in the first quarter of play. Packy Dollard scored in the first minute. He and other Lazers would add six more in the period.
Both teams are playing a very fast-tempo game. It is also a wise-open game with loose defending.

The Lazers' offense was even more effective in the second quarter, netting 10 goals. The halftime score was OCC 17 – Broome 6.
