Martins Named Player of the Year
Herkimer County Community College men's soccer player Lee Martins (Bridgeport, CT) was named National Junior College Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Martins is HCCC's seventh student-athlete to be named National Player of the Year. He received the award on Saturday, January 17 at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America coaches' All-American banquet in St. Louis, Missouri.
Martins, who was also named Region III Player of the Year, was selected as a first team All-American. He recorded 24 goals and had 16 assists for 64 points which placed him second in the nation for points.
Senior Harry Appiah (Pawtucket, RI) was also selected as a second team All-American. He had three goals and 17 assists for the season.
Martins and Appiah both captained the 2008 team to a 20-3-0 record and the program's seventh NJCAA national championship. "Both Harry and Lee were great leaders for us this season," said coach Pepe Aragon. "They are not only great players, but tremendous people as well."
