Herkimer Soccer Teams Visit Poland Central Schools

Members of Herkimer County Community College's men's and women's soccer teams visited students in middle and elementary schools at Poland Central School on Friday, October 9.

The visit was part of a community outreach effort spearheaded by HCCC Director of Athletics and Poland Central School graduate, Donald Dutcher. Dutcher said, "Our goal is to help students at local primary schools realize that a quality college education is available in their own backyard."

Men's soccer coach Pepe Aragon and women's soccer coach Amy Dommer led a presentation to middle school students during which they used their athletes to demonstrate key elements of the soccer game. After the presentation, students were able to meet and talk with the team members, including athletes from other countries, such as Brazil, England, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. The international athletes shared with students the importance of soccer in their home countries and how they have adjusted to life in upstate New York. Additionally, the athletes emphasized the value of a college education and the commitment it takes to succeed on the soccer field and in the classroom.

Throughout the visit, the most common theme was academics. Dutcher stressed, "It starts now for you. Do well in school and respect everyone helping you achieve each and every personal goal you have. Every day you get up, set a new goal to do better than the day before in school, at home, on the soccer field and for yourself."

The teams also participated in an informal practice session with first and second grade students. The students were led through a variety of soccer related activities, with a stress placed on sportsmanship.

Dutcher said, "This was a win-win situation for Herkimer County Community College and Poland Central School. It was a great opportunity for our student athletes to give back to the community. If we influenced one student to improve their academic achievement and respect for school and athletics, our visit was well worth it."

A second visit to Poland Central School is planned for the spring, in which Herkimer student-athletes will read to elementary school students in their classrooms, demonstrate life fitness activities and offer tips on improving soccer skills.
