Generals Drop Thriller to Suffolk in 2 OT
Herkimer's men's soccer team lost a heart breaker to Suffolk CC, 3-2 in double overtime, in Game One of the Northeast Cup Tournament hosted by Tompkins-Cortland CC. The Generals led 2-0 at the half, but Suffolk managed a great comeback.
Both Herkimer and Suffolk were ranked in the national Top 10 preseason poll by the National Junior College Athletic Association, so the game figured to be a close one. It lived up to expectations.
Joel Purkiss scored both Herkimer goals. Gustavo Pereira assisted on the first tally. Purkiss scored the second goal with a sterling free-kick blast that beat Suffolk keeper Jesse Nulty upper 90 on the right corner from 18 yards out. Purkiss hails from Sheffield, England, and as a newspaper in his homeland might say, he gained his "team-mates' favour with that brace."
The Generals play their second game of the season on Sunday, Aug. 29, at noon, in the second day of the Northeast Cup. Their opponent will be CC of Morris, another Top 10-ranked side.
