Herkimer Softball Sweeps Clinton; Mathis Hits Inside The Park Grand Slam
The Herkimer Generals offense exploded for 26 hits, 11 of which went for extra bases, and 31 runs enroute to a double header sweep over Clinton CC.
The first game saw the Cougars jump out to an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Generals would push across two runs in the bottom of the second. But it wasn't until the fourth inning when the Generals offense kicked into high gear as the first 9 batters that came to the plate all scored. On the mound, the Generals received a gutsy performance out of Sophomore Kayla Wallenhorst as she picked up her 5th win on the young season going all five innings striking out 4 and giving up 1 ER on two hits. The Generals offense was lead by Misty Mathis who went 1-3 with a grand slam and 4 rbi's and Kayla Wallenhorst who went 2-3 with 2 doubles. Emily Woudenberg went 2-2 and 3 runs scored as well.
In the second game, Freshman Courtney Hibbard threw a gem on the mound and the Generals offense gave her plenty of run support as they put up 19 runs on 16 hits. Hibbard went the distance for Herkimer striking out 4 while allowing only 1 earned on 4 hits. Hibbards victory was the first of her college career. At the plate, the Generals had plenty of hitting stars led freshman Krista Stubba (3-5, 3 runs, 1rbi), Kayla Ladd (2-2, 3 runs, 1 hr, 3 rbi's). Also putting up big numbers for the Generals were Amber Swanston (1-2, 2b, 2rbi's), Misty Mathis (2-3, 3 runs, 2 rbi's) Emily Woudenberg (1-1, 3 runs, 1rbi) Emily Douglas (3-3, 3 runs, 1rbi), Lindsay Johnson (2-4, 2 runs, 2b, 3rbi's) and Katie Monahan (2-2, 2 rbi's).
The wins improve the General's record to 6-4 overall and 5-0 in Region III play. Herkimer will be back in action this Tuesday, home vs FMCC at 3pm.
