Swim & Dive teams win pair of second places in Delhi meet

Delhi, NY – Herkimer’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams traveled to Delhi on Saturday, and both made strong showings.  Both teams earned second-place finishes – the men in a field of six teams and the women in a field of five.

The Generals swam and dived to six first-place finishes – two by diver Sylvia Ross and two by speedster Emily Washburn.  Ross earned first place in both the one meter and three meter diving event.  Washburn touched the final wall first in the 200 yard backstroke and the 500 freestyle.

The other first-place finishers were Sarah Ledwith and Rachel Rees.  Rees captured the 200 yard butterfly win with an effort five seconds faster than her previous best.

Sarah Ledwith deserves special praise for her accomplishments in the grueling 1650, which is just under a mile of swimming.  The senior swimmer has been training hard and improving remarkably.  Ledwith swam the 1650 in 26:02.99 in Herkimer’s home meet on January 14.  A week later, at Erie CC, she swam the near-mile in 25:42.83.  And in Delhi, on January 21, Ledwith earned first place with a time of 24:47.65.

The following six Generals set a total of nine personal best times at the Delhi meet:

Creighton Joscelyn: 50 FR, 100 FR (dropped 3 seconds), 200 BR (dropped 3 seconds)

David Nitto: 50 FR

Amanda Knox: 100 FR (dropped 4 seconds), 200 BR (dropped 5 seconds)

Bryan Jester: 500 FR (dropped 11 seconds)

Rachel Rees: 200 FLY (dropped  5 seconds)

Sarah Ledwith: 1650 FR (dropped 55 seconds)

The teams will travel to Genesee CC this Saturday, February 4, for the final meet of the regular season.
