Strong second half gives Lady Vikings win over Generals

Troy, NY – Hudson Valley and the Lady Generals met in Herkimer on December 12, and that game was so close that it went into overtime.  They met again in Troy on Saturday afternoon, and the game was tied at halftime.  Then the even scoring ended.  The Vikings stormed to a 78-52 win with a mighty second half.

The host Vikings scored first, but HCCC freshman Hayley Awerdick sank a three-pointer from behind the middle of the arc.  Then senior Vanessa Harris scored another three from the left side.  6-5 Herkimer.

Hudson Valley regained the lead, but Shannon McBride rose to the occasion.  The freshman sank an all-net three, and Herkimer led 11-9.

The first half saw scoring runs by both teams. The hosts took a 23-16 lead, but the Generals battled back with key scoring by Awerdick, Harris, and Tonaya Hollis.  When the two squads left the court, the scoreboard read 26-26.  The second half would be very different.

Awerdick’s two- and three-pointers kept Herkimer close, at 32-31, but then the Viking charge began.  The hosts scored nine unanswered points and were building momentum.  Vikings Adrianna Youngs and Tiana Lott went on to tally 33 between them during the second half.

The 78-52 loss dropped the Lady Generals below the .500 mark.  They are now 7-8.

The team’s next outing will be the 5:00 game in the big doubleheader Friday night on the Herkimer hilltop.  Both the women’s and men’s teams will be hosting the SUNY Delhi Broncos.
