Broncos win by a nose, Delhi defeats Lady Generals 69-67

Herkimer, NY – The Lady Generals played a winning first half and built an 11-point lead, but could not hold it.  The SUNY Delhi Broncos won the Friday evening game 69-67.  If the teams had been racing instead of playing basketball, the Broncos would have won by a nose.

The Generals got on the scoreboard first.  Sally Jo Frakes took and inbounds pass and scored with a nice, short shot.

Delhi then ran eight unanswered points, but Herkimer’s excellent guard Hayley Awerdick sank a three-pointer to get the Generals going again.  However, before the game was five minutes old, Awerdick had been charged with three fouls, so Head Coach John Campagna had to take her out of the game.

Shannon McBride entered the game and soon connected on a long three to tie the score at 8-8.  Alexia Brown scored, as did Kate Emerson.  Frakes scored again, and Tonaya Hollis netted two points.  Herkimer led 16-11.

The Generals continued to enjoy success.  Allie Webb scored a three from the right corner.  Hollis drove for two.  Frakes fed Hollis, who scored two more.  Vanessa Harris drove nicely for two.  Then Harris passed to Frakes, who scored.  Awerdick was back in the game.  She passed to Frakes for another field goal, and Herkimer led 29-13.

The first half ended with the Generals playing well.  Katie Monahan scored a long two.  Frakes was fouled and sank both free throws.  The teams left the floor with the Generals leading 38-27.

The second half began, and the Generals must have felt déjà vu.  They have had early-second-half problems several times this season, and it happened again against Delhi.  The Broncos came onto the floor and scored 13 unanswered points.  The Generals’ 11-point lead had become a two-point deficit.

Alexis Havens netted a three.  (See video below.)  Then Havens connected with Emerson.  Emerson scored, and Herkimer led 45-44.

The Generals kept the lead until Delhi tied it 56-56 with six minutes to play.  The game and the lead went back and forth.  Hollis made a great block of a Delhi shot.  Her block stopped a certain goal.

Hollis put in a rebound with 1:21 to play.  64-64.  But Delhi scored three on a field-goal-plus-foul play, and they made that narrow lead hold up.  The end game was exciting, but the Generals could not catch up.  The final score was 69-67.

HCCC is now 7-9 on the season.  Their next game will be on Sunday in Corning.  Then on Tuesday the team will join with the Dairy Association for a special night.  Click here for details.
