Steady play by Baronesses defeats Lady Generals

Corning, NY – The Herkimer Five looked to be in charge of the game early on, but the Lady Red Barons played a steady, good game and won 66-55 Sunday afternoon on the Corning campus.

Sunday was a beautiful day for a bus trip.  The women’s and men’s teams traveled through Central New York and, via Seneca Lake’s east shore, on to the Southern Tier.  The game was played in Corning CC’s handsome Wayne Kenner Court.

The Generals seemed to be the better team for about the first quarter of the game.  Sam Downey opened the scoring.  Hayley Awerdick sank a three-pointer from the left side, and the visitors led 5-0.  Vanessa Harris tallied a three from the center of the arc.  Downey was fouled while shooting and sank both free throws.  Herkimer still led by five, 10-5.

Allie Webb fed Sally Jo Frakes, who scored.  Harris made a great drive through traffic and scored.  Kate Emerson made a spin move in the paint and scored, preserving Herkimer’s five-point lead at 16-11.  But then the game changed.

This Generals team has had problems with dry spells this season, and, with the score 17-14, their shooting went absolutely arid.  In a period of about seven minutes that 17-14 lead became a 12-point deficit at 33-21.

The team finally started scoring again, but the damage had been done.  The final Herkimer tally of the half was a Katie Monahan free throw.  The half ended 39-27 in the home team’s favor.

The Corning crew continued to score in the second stanza.  The Generals were now keeping pace, but the gap continued to hover around 11 points.

With about eight minutes to play, Harris sank two free throws and closed the score to 57-48.  Harris hit a three and Tonaya Hollis scored a field goal to bring the Generals within seven points, but Corning pulled away again and earned a 66-55 win.

The Generals are now 7-10 for the season.  Their next game will be at home on Tuesday, January 31.  It will be a 7:00 p.m. contest with Mohawk Valley and will feature several promotions by the Herkimer County Dairy Association.  Click here for more information on that special night.
