Lady Generals Lose Lead, Tie Brookdale

Herkimer’s Women’s soccer team earned a healthy 2-0 lead over the visiting Brookdale Blues, but a resilient Blues team came back to earn a 2-2 tie.

The game was each squad’s second in the Coliseum Kickoff Classic tournament.  It was played on a beautiful, but hot afternoon at Wehrum Stadium.  The Generals won on Saturday and tied this, the Sunday game.

Co-Captain Ashley Tracy (Cobleskill) quarterbacked the first Herkimer goal.  She controlled the ball at midfield and advanced it to Krista Stubba (Poland, NY) on the right wing.  Stubba then fired a shot on goal that rebounded to Tiffany Jones-Maxwell.  The tall forward from Hamilton then beat the goalkeeper quite nicely for the tally (pictured).

Herkimer’s second goal was also the result of a fine play.  Ashleigh Tracy received the ball on the left wing and advanced, then crossed to Amanda Brown (Oxford), who beat the keeper cleanly for her second goal in as many days.

Michelle Cuomo (Rotterdam) tended goal for the Lady Generals in the first half, and played fullback in the second half.  She made some key saves in the opening half, including an impressive double save with 22 minutes left.  Brookdale, however, scored seven minutes later on a high, unstoppable shot.

Rachel Abrams (Highland Falls) was Herkimer’s keeper for the second half, and played quite well.  She was victimized, however, by a perfect shot by Brookdale’s Alissa Fiorillo, who put it tightly into the upper right corner from distance.

The Lady Generals mounted several strong attacks during the final quarter of the game, but could not score.  Their record is now 2-0-1.  Their next game is Sunday, September 5, at noon, when they host Clinton County in their first Mountain Valley Conference contest of the season.  That will be the first game of a double-header, with Herkimer’s men also hosting Clinton at 2:00.
