Herkimer hosts women’s soccer Region 3 championships

This story was written and updated while the games were being played.  The first paragraphs appeared online prior to the first match.

Herkimer, NY – HCCC is hosting the Region 3 women’s soccer finals today.  #1 seed Finger Lakes meets #4 seed Mohawk Valley at 11:00 a.m.  #3 Herkimer meets #2 Jamestown-Olean at 1:30.

The format for the Regionals has changed this year.  Region 3 and Region 19 (New Jersey, eastern PA, and Delaware) are now alternating years to send two teams to the national Final Eight.  This year is Region 3’s year to send two teams, so both the winner of the MV-Jamestown game and the winner of the Herkimer-Finger Lakes match will go on to the national Final Eight.

The women’s Final Eight – the national championship – will be played November 3-6 at Tompkins-Cortland CC.

This story will be updated as the day’s games progress.

Also, Herkimer’s men are also playing a Region 3 finals game today, at Tompkins-Cortland.  The #2-seeded Generals will play #3 Mohawk Valley at 11:00 a.m.  We will also attempt to give updates on the Herkimer men’s game in this story.

Note:  The most recent updates appear first, below, and the older updates will follow.

Update 7:03

The Jamestown-Olean Jaguars are moving on to the national Final Eight.  The Generals' sterling season has come to an end.

The Herkimer eleven had a fine season -- a season that was even better than their impressive 11-5-2 record suggests.  They proved that they could play with the top teams.  The Generals lost five games, but only Onondaga beat them by more than two goals.  OCC won that game, at OCC, by a score of 3-0.

Generals Michelle Cuomo and Jessica Dutka earned All-Tournament Team honors, and are pictured below.

HCCC offers a snappy Generals' salute to the Jaguars.
