NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

1996 -  Women's Cross Country, April Messenger, 19:59.40

The cross country program at Herkimer County Community College is catered to the individual athlete.  Personalized workout plans are set up depending on the athlete's conditioning level.  Weekly practices consist of distance training, interval training, pace workouts, pool workouts, and circuit training.  Typically, students arrive back to Herkimer two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

The cross country program has the unique ability to compete against all facets of the running world.  Herkimer County Community College runs against division I superpowers like Syracuse University, Colgate University, and Harvard University, as well as top local competition by participating in Utica's Falling Leaves Road Race.  Each race gears the athlete to have a peak performance at the end of the season when they run the Mountain Valley Conference, Regional, and National Championship Races.

CROSS COUNTRY COURSE

The Herkimer County Community College cross country course is located on the vast acreage behind the athletic facilities.  This scenic trail combines the earth and water to provide a challenging trek over the 3.1 mile course.  A longer loop is incorporated for the men's competitions extending the course to 5 miles.   Although the terrain is mostly flat, there are several short inclines that maintain high levels of intensity.  The course is perfect for spectators as there are several places to observe the race.
