Generals win with another second-half surge

Herkimer, NY – Once again the Generals trailed after a low-scoring first half but prevailed with a strong second-half showing. The Herkimer Five tamed the Timberwolves of SUNY Adirondack 62-53 on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman guard Samantha Randio had another solid game for the Green & Gold. She scored Herkimer's first five points with two field goals and a free throw.

The contest was tied 8-8 when the visitors started to pull away. Whitney Brown connected on two 10-foot jumpers, but Adirondack moved out to an 18-12 lead. Shileeka Williams hit two threes and Brown added two more tallies, but Herkimer trailed 26-22 at the break.

Senior guard Allie Webb was able to play for the first time since injuring her knee prior to Thanksgiving. She sank two threes in the Generals' second half.

wbball 01 13 2013 WilliamsThe Generals were a different team in the second half. Freshman center Victoria Seabrooks scored eight points. Williams added eight. By the time the game was in its final four minutes, Herkimer led by 10, at 53-43. The contest concluded with Aniya Webb sinking both tries of a one-and-one, and then Brown stealing the ball and running out the clock.

The win raises the Generals record to 11-3 – their best start in recent years. First-year Head Coach BJ Gouger was pleased with the win. "We decided to push the pace in the second half, and that helped us," stated Gouger, who added, "Shi (Williams) was huge in the second half and Sam (Randio) made some big buckets – so did Vic (Seabrooks). Now let's go get 'em on Sunday."

The squad will host Clinton CC in a 5:00 p.m. game Sunday afternoon. That game will follow the title game of the men's Second Annual Philly Tournament.
