Generals defeat Vikings 59-52

wbball 01 20 2013 RandioTroy, NY – It took some time, but the Generals got their offense going and played a strong end game to defeat the Hudson Valley Vikings on Saturday afternoon. The visiting Generals trailed by one point at the break but played a strong second half in earning the 59-52 win.

The two teams kept pace with each other throughout the first 20 minutes. The Vikings drew first blood with a three-pointer, but Samantha Randio made a nice drive to the basket and got Herkimer on the scoreboard. Randio went on to lead the Generals with an impressive 20-point day.

Hudson Valley led 10-7, but Randio stole the ball and scored, keeping Herkimer close at 10-9.

The Generals suffered a cold spell and fell behind 20-10, but Shileeka Williams and Whitney Brown scored two nice field goals in 29 seconds to get Herkimer back into a scoring mode. Randio scored again, and the Generals were within four, at 20-16.

The taller Vikings were rebounding well, but the Generals countered with hustle. The game's 20th minute saw Stacy Loucks sink a free throw, Whitney Brown drive for a three-point play, and Brown drive again to make the score 24-23 as the teams left the court.

Shi Williams scored the visitors' first basket of the second half. Brown drained a three-pointer (see video below) and the game was tied at 28-all. A Randio two gave HCCC the lead, but the lead would change hands for a while.

Randio ran into foul trouble and picked up her fourth with 17 minutes still to play. However, she was having such a strong game that Head Coach BJ Gouger allowed her to play most of the remaining minutes.

The Vikings built a five-point lead, but Alyssa Craig sank a three. Williams scored, and it was 40-40. The home team went ahead again but Loucks hit for three from the left side, and Herkimer had a lead that they would not relinquish.

Randio scored from the line. Victoria Seabrooks tallied with a putback. Brown hit for two more, and Herkimer led 52-47.

With 1:39 to play, Aniya Webb drove deftly and scored. A minute later she sank a free throw, and the Generals led 55-49. Randio and Seabrooks added more points, and Herkimer won with a 59-52 final score.

The Generals raised their season record to a sterling 12-4. Their next game will be at Fulton Montgomery on Tuesday when they will meet the strong Raiders squad in a 5:00 p.m. contest.
