Morrett and Campanian lead Generals at SUNY IT

(Victoria Campanian finished in second place at SUNY IT Saturday, posting a 20:12).

(Sam Morrett finished in 19th place Saturday, posting a 30:28).

UTICA, NY – Well rested from not having an event last weekend, the Herkimer Generals cross country program saw the men finish fifth overall and the women finish third overall at the SUNY Poly Wildcat Weekend Classic Saturday afternoon (9/27).

The men had three runners finish in the Top 30, running under a 6:30 pace. They were Sam Morrett (Cohoes, NY), Daniel Thomas (Coton, UK), Jace LaPuma (Little Falls, NY) and Gregory Ashe (Watertown, NY). Morrett was the first General to cross the finish, placing 19th overall thanks to a 6:08 pace. Just a couple spots behind Morrett were Thomas and LaPuma, finishing in 24th and 26th place respectively, posting a 31:19 and 31:28. As for Ashe’s 6:29 pace, it got him 28th, posting a 32:12.

The final three finishers for the men were Philip Tanner (Deposit, NY), Divontay Huggins (Brooklyn, NY) and Josh Paoni (Herkimer, NY). Tanner finished 35th (34:35), Huggins finished 40th (35:59) and Paoni finished 52nd (42:32).

As for the women, they fared much better than the men on Saturday, having six runners place in the Top 30. Victoria Campanian (Glenfield, NY) led the group, placing second for the third consecutive race thanks to a 6:30 pace. After Campanian, Haruka Murakami (Ibaraki, Japan) finished one spot out of the Top 10, placing 11th thanks to a 22:45. Sharon Howell (Ilion, NY) and Tianderah Twichell (West Winfield, NY) finished within two spots of each other, placing 17th and 19th thanks to a 7:41 and 7:53 pace.

Olivia Lazarus (South New Berline, NY) and Alicia Burnett (Inlet, NY) were the final two Generals too finish in the Top 30. Lazarus placed 26th (26:02) and Burnett placed 29th (26:34). Outside of the Top 30 was freshman Jessica Inserra (Yorkville, NY). She finished 41st, running a 9:50 pace.

Herkimer’s next meet is at SUNY Delhi on Wednesday, October 8th. It’s scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
