Campanian repeats as MVC Champion

TROY, NY – Led by a group of sophomores Saturday (10/18) at the Mountain Valley Conference Championship hosted by Hudson Valley, both Herkimer Generals cross country programs finished in third overall, led by Sam Morrett (Cohoes, NY) and Victoria Campanian (Glenfield, NY).

For the men, Morrett finished in sixth place, the same spot as last season, posting a 22:18 which was 32 second better than his time from a year ago. His effort earned him a spot on the Mountain Valley All Conference Team, given to the top seven finishers.

The final five men to participate were Daniel Thomas (Coton, UK), Gregory Ashe (Watertown, NY), Jace LaPuma (Little Falls, NY), Philip Tanner (Deposit, NY), Divontay Huggins (Brooklyn, NY) and Josh Paoni (Herkimer, NY). It was Thomas third best time of the season, finishing 19th (23:30). 24:05 gave Ashe 20th place, his second best time. LaPuma finished in 22nd place, posting a 24:38; Tanner finished 24th (25:13), Huggins finished 28th (27:17) and Paoni finished 29th (27:36).

As for the women, Campanian again led the way, finishing first for a second consecutive season in the race, making her a Mountain Valley Conference Champion. It was Campanian’s second first place finish in her last three races, and her time of 18:03 was the best to date, beating her 20:06 from 2013 at Herkimer College.

Joining Campanian on the Mountain Valley All Conference Team was Haruka Murakami (Ibaraki, Japan). The sophomore finished in seventh overall, posting a 20:30 which was a personal best.

Following Campanian and Murakami were Tianderah Twichell (West Winfield, NY), Sharon E. Howell (Ilion, NY), Alicia Burnett (Inlet, NY), Olivia Lazarus (South New Berlin, NY) and Jessica Inserra (Yorkville, NY). All had personal best. Twichell finished in 13th (21:24), Howell finished in 17th (22:43), Burnett finished in 21st (23:47), Lazarus finished in 24th (25:55) and Inserra finished in 26th (26:40).

The Generals are back at it next week, traveling to SUNY Delhi for the Region III Championship. Morrett and Campanian will look to defend as Region III Champions with competition beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 25th.
