Generals get back in the win column against Hornets

BINGHAMTON, NY – Almost reaching the 20 goal mark for the second time the season, the Herkimer Generals women’s lacrosse team traveled to Broome Thursday evening and defeated the Hornets 19-7 at East Middle School.

Herkimer 2-2 (1-0) evened up their record after dropping two straight games at home thanks to another offensive explosion. The Generals started the game scoring four unanswered goals (4-0) within the first four minutes of play on three goals from Courtney Canavan (Baldwinsville, NY) and one from Nicole Evans (Cortland, NY). Canavan and Evans combined for 10 goals in the game, with each tallying five by games end.

Herkimer ripped of four unanswered goals two more times in the first half to balloon the lead from 8-1 then 12-2. Doing most of the damage within the final 20 minutes of the first half was Alexis Caughey (Cortland, NY), Ashley Luna (Saratoga, NY), Emilie Coufal (Syracuse, NY) and Canavan. Caughey scored three times, Luna scored once, Coufal scored twice and Canavan scored twice. Caughey finished the game with four goals and four assists; Luna finished with one goal; and Coufal finished with four goals and one assist.

In the second half, the Hornets offense came to life, scoring two unanswered goals, but the Generals ripped off seven consecutive goals in the matter of 20 minutes to reach 19 goals in the game with a little over 90 seconds left in regulation. Evans and Caughey scored or assisted on each of the seven unanswered goals, giving their team a 14 goal advantage before the Hornets scored the final two goals of the game, making the deficit 12.

Herkimer’s next game is Saturday against Niagara County Community College. The Generals will host the Thunderwolves at 1 p.m. at Wehrum Stadium.
