Three goal lead not enough against Thunderwolves

(The Generals defense played well in the first half on Saturday, only allowing two goals).

(Alexis Caughey had two goals against the Thunderwolves at Wehrum Stadium).

HERKIMER, NY – Allowing six unanswered goals in the second half of Saturday’s game against Niagara County Community College, the Herkimer Generals failed to keep a three goal lead against the Thunderwolves, losing at Wehrum Stadium 9-6.

Herkimer 2-3 (1-0) jumped out to a three goal lead within the first nine minutes of the game on goals from Nicole Evans (Cortland, NY) and Alexis Caughey (Cortland, NY). Playing well in a snow storm, the Generals kept up the momentum until Niagara scored two consecutive goals in the matter of three minutes, cutting the lead to one (3-2) with 11 minutes left in the first half.

Both team’s played tough in the rest of the half, but neither scored, giving Herkimer one of their lowest offensive outputs this season at home.

It didn’t take long for Evans to put her team up by two goals in the second half, scoring on a free position shot with 29:17 left in regulation. Niagara did answer one minute later, putting the deficit at one again (4-3), but goals by Herkimer’s Emilie Coufal and Caughey gave the Generals the cushion they needed with over 25 minutes left. The goals were Coufal’s seventh and Caughey’s 15th this season.

Unfortunately for the Generals, it would be their last goals of the game, getting outscored 6-0 in the closing minutes of the game, relinquishing the lead with 19 minutes left. April Maziarz was relentless, scoring five goals for the Thunderwolves, giving Herkimer a difficult loss after defeating Broome by 12 on Thursday.

Herkimer’s next game is Wednesday (4/9). They’ll host Mohawk Valley at Wehrum Stadium looking to beat the Hawks for a second time this season. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
