Generals score seven unanswered in second half against Kats
WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – Aided by a strong second half which saw the Herkimer Generals Women’s Lacrosse team net nine goals in the second half of Sunday’s game at Erie Community College, the Generals won their second consecutive match, defeating the Kats 12-6.
Herkimer 4-3 (2-0) led for the first time in the match after sophomore Emilie Coufal (Syracuse, NY) scored unassisted with 12:33 left in the first half. Herkimer would not relinquish the lead in the final 12 minutes, only allowing one more goal on the defensive end.
Nicole Evans (Cortland, NY) gave the Generals a 3-2 lead a little over two minutes after Coufal’s goal, netting her second of the half with 10:15 left. Evans finished with two goals and two assists, helping the Generals to a 3-2 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the Kats outplayed the Generals in the first 12 minutes of play, outscoring Herkimer 4-2. It helped the Kats take a 6-5 lead. Answering Erie in the final 13 minutes of regulation was sophomore Courtney Canavan (Baldwinsville, NY). Canavan scored a game-high six goals in the second half, tallying four of the Generals seven unanswered in the final 13 minutes, increasing her goal total this season to 28, the third most scored in the nation.
Also getting in the act during the second half was Alexis Caughey (Cortland, NY) and Ashley Dennis (Cooperstown, NY). Caughey scored twice - on assists from Dennis and Coufal - while Dennis scored once on an assist from Evans.
In the goal for the Generals on Sunday was Kristin Menge (Warwick, NY). Menge saved 15 shots, one of her highest totals this season.
The Generals next match is against Jefferson Community College. Herkimer will host the Cannoneers at Wehrum Stadium on Wednesday the 16th. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
