Herkimer Women's Soccer wins season opener

HERKIMER, NY - The Herkimer Generals Women's Soccer team opened their season in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon at Wehrum Stadium, scoring just 26 seconds into the contest and cruising to a 3-0 win over Division I Sussex Community College (Newton, NJ).

Kalli Warmingham (Newport, NY) and Julia Jaikin (Dolgeville, NY) combined on the quick strike which jump started the General's 2013 campaign. Warmingham took an outside shot that rebounded directly to Jaikin who finished it off to give Herkimer a quick 1-0 lead. Freshman Danielle Nicosia (Oneonta, NY) struck for the Generals 13 minutes later with a direct kick, giving Herkimer a 2-0 advantage into halftime.

The second half saw a lot of back-and-forth play before Kelsey Bean (Essex Junction, VT) intercepted a pass and found Emily Rexford (Canton, NY) who tallied the final goal of the game with five minutes left to play to secure the 3-0 final score.

Kristi Bills (Northville, NY) was outstanding in net for Herkimer, making 20 saves on the afternoon to get the shutout win.

The Generals get right back at it tomorrow as they host national power, Holyoke Community College (Holyoke, MA) at 12 Noon at Wehrum Stadium.
