Smaldone collects five RBIs in win over Cannoneers

WATERTOWN, NY – Continuing were they left off over the weekend, the Herkimer Generals Softball team scored their fifth double digit run total in 11 days, defeating Jefferson Community College on Monday 12-5.

Herkimer 15-5 (6-1) scored in every inning in this one, accumulating 17 hits – one of them a home run by sophomore Sammy Smaldone (Delmar, NY) – and lead 12-1 until allowing four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Starting her third game in three days, Toni Secreti (Syracuse, NY) allowed four earned runs off of eight hits in five innings. Before that, Secreti went two consecutive starts without allowing a run, accumulating 12 scoreless innings.

Behind Secreti, the Generals had 16 hits come from the one through six spot in the lineup. That group also collected 12 RBIs, led by Smaldone’s five, going 3-for-4 in the game with her second home run of the season and a double.

Ashley Sterritt (Accord, NY) and Delaney Buckley (Utica, NY) were a couple RBIs behind Smaldone, tallying two RBIs respectively with Sterritt going 3-for-4 in the game with two doubles and Buckley going 4-for-4 with two doubles as well.

Rounding out the attack was Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, NY), Tina Karaqi (Thornwood, NY) and Rebekah Kitchen (Delmar, NY). Each added an RBI to the Generals totals, with Heimbach going 3-for-4 with two doubles and both Karaqi and Kitchen going 2-for-3.

Herkimer’s next game is against conference foe Columbia-Greene Community College. It will be the Generals first game of a six-game home stand. The doubleheader between the Generals and Twins will be played on Thursday, April 17th. First pitched is scheduled for 2 p.m.
