Softball ends season taking two from Onondaga

SYRACUSE, NY – Facing another Top 5 opponent in the Region III on consecutive days, the Herkimer Generals softball team did what they’ve been doing since the beginning of April - win - defeating Onondaga on their home turf 3-1 and 5-2 in a doubleheader Sunday.

Herkimer 27-5 (10-1) allowed five runs all weekend against both Monroe Community College and Onondaga Community College in 26 innings. Toni Secreti (Syracuse, NY) and Brittany Ormond (New Paltz, NY) got the job done on Saturday, while Alyssa LaLonde (Johnstown, NY) and Secreti got the job done on Sunday.

Pitching the first game was Secreti, who hadn’t allowed a run in her last 22 innings pitched. The sophomore managed to increase that total to 24 innings before the Lazers captured the first lead of the game in the third inning 1-0. Jenn Deuel (Whitesboro, NY) knocked in Chantel Hammond (Ithaca, NY), scoring Onondaga’s only run of the game, seeing Secreti only allow five hits in seven innings pitched.

From there, the Generals scored three unanswered runs in the fourth and sixth innings off the bats of Tina Karaqi (Thornwood, NY), Alyssa Balfe (Oriskany, NY) and Caitlin Sanders (Duanesburg, NY). Each collected one hit in the game, scoring Delaney Buckley (Utica, NY), Kathryn Dolly (Herkimer, NY) and Karintha Myslivecek (Redfield, NY).

In game two - the Generals gave LaLonde a cushion - scoring three runs in the first inning, helping the sophomore pitch a complete game seven hitter, only allowing runs in the first and seventh innings.

Familiarity with the pitcher might have helped Herkimer in the second game, with the Lazers starting Brittney Sears (Phoenix, NY) in consecutive games after throwing seven innings in the 3-1 loss. The starter only lasted four innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits.

Getting the big hits against Sears were Kayla Bancroft (Fort Ann, NY), Gina Grant (Niskayuna, NY) and Buckley. Bancroft finished game two with three RBIs, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Grant and Buckley both had one RBI, with Buckley finishing 2-for-4 at the plate, helping Herkimer score in the first three innings of game two.

Herkimer’s next game is Tuesday (5/6). They’ll host Hudson Valley at Herkimer College in a Region III DIII Softball Semifinal game. The Generals are the No. 2 seed while the Vikings are the #7 seed. Game time between both opponents is set for 4 p.m. Herkimer is 2-0 against Hudson Valley this season.
