Softball outscores Thunderwolves 29-1 in Doubleheader

(Alexis Capasso's inside-the-park home run in the second inning gave the Generals a 9-0 lead Sunday).

(Kayla Bancroft went 3-for-4 in game two of the doubleheader with two RBIs).

HERKIMER, NY – Finishing the week outscoring opponents 74-to-1, the Herkimer Generals softball team defeated Niagara County Community College 13-0 and 16-1 in a doubleheader on Sunday.

Herkimer 23-5 (10-1) had 18 hits in game one and 14 in game two, scoring in all 10 innings played in against the Thunderwolves. Included in those 32 hits was six home runs. Ashley Sterritt (Accord, NY), Sammy Smaldone (Delmar, NY), Kathryn Dolly (Herkimer, NY) and Caitlin Sanders (Duanesburg, NY) hit them in game one, while Alexis Capasso (Gloversville, NY) got hers in the second game by virtue of an inside-the-park home run. Sterritt finished the first game 1-for-3 with three RBIs, Smaldone went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two home runs, Sanders went 1-for-1 with one RBI and Dolly went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Both home runs by Sanders and Dolly were their first of the season. Capasso went 2-for-4 in game two with two RBIs.

Adding to the attack in the first game was Tina Karaqi (Thornwood, NY) and Alyssa Balfe (Oriskany, NY). Both sophomores went 2-for-2 with Karaqi accumulating one RBI and Balfe amassing two, helping starting pitcher Toni Secreti (Syracuse, NY) get her 12th win of the season, pitching a complete game shutout – her seventh of the season and third consecutive dating back to April 19th.

In game two, Alyssa LaLonde (Johnstown, NY) got the start. LaLonde also threw a complete game, earning her seventh win and complete game this season. LaLonde has only allowed two earned runs in her last two appearances.

Helping their starter in game two at the plate was Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, NY), Sterritt, Kayla Bancroft (Fort Ann, NY) and Caitlin Sanders (Duanesburg, NY). Heimbach scored a game-high four runs from the lead-off spot, finishing with two RBIs on 3-for-3 from the plate. Sterritt finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, Bancroft finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Sanders finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Herkimer’s next doubleheader is Tuesday (4/29). It will be the start of a four-game stint away from home before finishing the season at home against Fulton-Montgomery. On Tuesday the Generals will travel to Rochester, NY to take on Monroe Community College. The Tribunes will host the doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
